BITUMEN EMULSION

Bitumen Emulsion is one of the main ingredients used in road construction and maintenance. It is a two-phase system consisting of bitumen, water and one more additives(Emulsifiers). Bitumen is dispersed throughout the water phase in the form of discrete globules typically in the range of 0.1 to 10 micron in size, which are held in suspension in water and prevented from flocculating and settling by emulsifier charges. The emulsifier plays an important role to keep the bitumen droplets in a stable suspension, control breaking time and aids adhesion also.Bitumen Emulsion typically contains 50-75% bitumen, o.1-2% emulsifying agent and rest water. These components are introduced into a colloid mill that operates at a very high speed motor (1000-6000rpm) which shears bitumen emulsion into tiny globules. Variable Rotor Stator Gap in Colloid mill controls bitumen material. The size of globules that in turn controls the viscosity of bitumen emulsion. HOW QUICKLY THE EMULSION REVERTS TO BITUMEN?


On the basis of how quickly the emulsion reverts to bitumen, cationic bitumen emulsions are divided into Rapid setting, Medium setting and Slow setting emulsion. Further classified as per IS: 8887-2004 into RS-1, RS-2, MS, SS-1 and SS-2.

Crumb Rubber Modified Bitumen (CRMB)

It uses homogenous as well as firm dissipation of crumb rubber in the original bitumen modification. Its production process comprise of a wide range of components i.e. crumb rubber, resins, hydrocarbon materials, natural asphalt, latex etc.

POLYMER MODIFIED BITUMEN (PMB)


Polymer Modified Bitumen (PMB) is used to enhance the quality of bitumen emulsion. Certain polymers or additives are added in the original bitumen mix to inculcate additional binding qualities. The addition alters the chemical configuration and/or physical/ mechanical properties of the original bitumen in order to improve its resistance power to weather conditions or change in temperature. In actual, it alters its elastic viscous behavior of the bitumen to tolerate high stress.Use of PMB in road construction ensures smooth transportation of heavy loaded vehicles. Due to the fact that these are equipped with amazing resistant qualities i.e. water repellent, heat resistant, crack resistant etc. which makes it perfect for increased road durability.

Types of PMB in accordance with certified international standards


PMB 120

It is suitable for cold climatic places where temperature is below 10 Degree Celsius


PMB 70

Is apt for moderate climatic places where temperature is from 10 to -10 Degree Celsius


PMB 45

It is best for areas having hot climate and where temperature is above 10 Degree Celsius


KTECH COLD MIX


Cold mix is bituminous mixture containing mineral aggregate, water and binder (custom designed cationic bitumen emulsion) prepared by a suitable device like concretemixer or cold mix plant or a modified hot mix plant.


Cold Mix Technology is cost effective as well as environment friendly due to the fact that construction work can proceed in all seasons and even with wet aggregates. Due to topographical constraints, rural roads projects in North Eastern States of India like Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Sikkim and others have got delayed. Use of Cold Mix Technology is proved to be most suitable in these states. The biggest advantage of the technology is that it saves on an average approximately 1500L of precious fossil fuel per kilometer of road construction. Cold mix pavement can provide energy savings of over 50% compared with hot mix. So it can be considered as green technology for infrastructure Projects. APPLICATION OF K TECH COLD MIX


Construction Process of 20 mm Open Graded Premix Carpet (Using Concrete Mixer)


  • The cold mixed open graded premix may also be prepared in a concrete mixer. For this purpose, the blended aggregates of 13.2mm and 11.2mm size in 2:1 ratio shall be charged into concrete mixer.


  • The required quantity (7-8% by wt of aggregate) of KTECH Cold Mix shall be added and mixed with aggregates for two minutes. Prolong mixing (more than two minutes) shall be avoided as it tends to decoat the binder from aggregates.


  • The KTECH cold mix when start indicating brownish colour shall be discharged into trolley to transport for, use. Compaction of cold mix with 8-10 tone road roller shall be carried out to get the finished premix carpet surface.

  • To ensure better performance use KTECH Cold Mix without diluting with any solvent. It is recommended to roll the drums in to and fro motion before application. KTECH Cold Mix is available in 200 Kg (Net) MS and HDPE drums, own fleet of tankers ensure smooth and safe deliveries of Bulk Supplies.
